HIPTOPIA

What is Utopia? Most movies have white, blond, twenty-something people running around in togas. That is a very boring utopia. Others have a winged angle utopia with god/ Christ being the ultimate leader/father figure and everyone is soooo nice…and dull. And there is the Mother Ship utopia where everyone is colored, wearing groovy dashikis and listening to radical funk. Out of the three, I’d pick this one but being white I’d be in the back of the ship.

What would a real utopia look like, a modern updated utopia? I ain’t talking some high-rise, virtual-reality, techno-utopia. This is so out of touch that it is doomed to fail. Can we create a vision of utopia that is sustainable, that is real and attainable?

A utopia that includes the Earth.

It is radical to include life on Earth in any of these utopia visions because utopias are in the human mind and we tend to only think of ourselves.

A utopia with natural beauty means dirt, poop, sticks, rocks, and animals that don’t come when they are called. And what about having multicultural people around? That makes culture alive and interesting, but also means we don’t all agree or see things in the same way. This utopia will include the messiness of life.

And how about a utopia where we all have enough to eat and a place to sleep. In a hippie Utopia, all the food would be organic, and we would live in small communes.

Every Utopia has no wars, that’s a given. Some Utopias include living forever, but how about just having basic healthcare. Do we want old people in this Utopia? How about no bitchy curmudgeons but rather some cool elders that have something to say and are helping the youth.

Anything else?

Oh yeah- political leaders that are caring people with no interest in making money but rather would like to serve and protect the people.
