Hippie fashion
Tie dye was the typical hippie iconic clothing, but really it was just a quick fix for adding some color to your wardrobe. Most hipsters work it a bit harder with ethnic highlights, reused, cut-up clothing, and self-made style.
It’s about hair
You know the saying -“Let your freak flag fly.” Well, we have come a long way from just having long hair. This couple has such a great look. Their hair is unique, and together, they really rock it. Hair is still a way to explore the infinite ways to be unique.
A self made man
My name is Tree Light. I like to make my things because I try not to buy anything if I can help it. And I like to make things how I want them. I keep it simple.
One of the overlooked fashions is homemade clothing. It is ignored because no one makes money off of it. Handmade clothing is truly a unique fashion, one suited to the individual. At the beginning of the hippy culture, it was this self-made style that was ‘in’. Now, like all rebellious styles, hippy fashion has been commercialized and hence made trivial and generic. The whole counterculture vibe has been summarized into tie-dye.
SIMPLE HIPPY FASHION
“These are wild peas. You see them all over the place. They grow in huge groups around my farm. We sort of fostered them to grow in areas around the house and whatnot. I picked some and made a little wreath. It’s simple, it's natural, beautiful, and easy to put together.”
MORE THAN TIE-DYE
Tie-dye is the way we show our true colors as a hippie. But it is not the only way. Fashion never stays the same so what is hip with the hippies today?
Fashion is blasting past tie dye. We love splashes of color but have added computerized fractals.
I mean there really is no rules for color. Just wear it.
But earth tones work also, especially with patterns.
Of course there is the marijuanna leaf. That always flies.
Hippies can be cool and wear black too.
Black and white stripes, polka dots, and tiger stripes.
Checkers.
Or whatever- just as long as your unique.
But what is the rage today? Is it pink fish?
With the ecology of the world on our minds, plants of all kinds are what the hip are wearing.
But the real rage of the day is mushrooms. With the movie Fantastic Fungi rocking the hippie movie scene, and the increasing knowledge that fungi will help remediate the toxic soil we have created in this millennium, the hip are wearing images of fungi.
Both men and women are adorning themselves in fungi fashion.
Cute as a mushroom cap.
Anatomically correct mushroom wear.
Here is a combo of a few style revolutions - men in stretch pants, black and white, and mushrooms!
Mushroom earrings.
If you can’t find a fabric or jewelry, just wear a hat that makes you look like a mushroom.
This group made their own mushroom hats and implanted chia seeds on their vests to give them a tactile, earthy look.
Fungi is the fashion for fun guys

Male Freedom
The Square Paradigm is oppressive but when we are raised with oppression, it becomes the norm. Women have been trying for decades to find their freedom, but men also are repressed but just don’t know it. Let’s talk about men’s fashions to illustrate the unconscious, self-inflicted, repression of men. When you look at men’s wear it is very boring- jeans, t-shirt with advertising and a baseball cap. Any statement of uniqueness a man can express is what brand is on his hat and t-shirt. The homogeny is stifling, yet widely accepted. It is accepted because of mostly fear; fear of being called a woman, fear of being gay, fear of not fitting in.
When a man lets go of fear- that is when he really becomes his own man. He has courage to be himself. Now he can grow his hair or beard, wear colors, put on jewelry, make his own cloths, choose his own beauty. And you know what- women like that.
Wabi sabi
Old fur pelts, sowed together in a new pattern. Bold, modern, but made with old material. Wabi Sabi, the Japanese word for something beautiful, that is more precious because it is fixed or made from something old or broken.
Modern Hippie fashion takes the old and makes it new. It explores the edges of acceptability with an open mind but with environmental consideration.
Basically old retro polyester, with the collar cut off and alterations- yes.
New polyester from big box store- no.
The best description of one of the factors that influences what clothing is chosen by a hippie is Wabi Sabi.
Wabi Sabi- a Japanese world view centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection. The aesthetic is sometimes described as one of beauty that is "imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete.” - Wikipedia
Its a relaxed style where natural funk and crazy color collide-
Think about what you love and then put it on.
Counter culture has moved way beyond tie dye....
Combining cultures, patterns and color in a personal and unique way is the root of hip fashion. Model, Aisa, chose an old t-shirt, cut up and a bold floral dress.
