BOHEMIAN BARBIE
There hasn’t been such a fervor of movie watching since The Black Panther or Avatar. For such a cheesy doll flick, it sure is creating a lot of waves. It’s rocking the boat on the patriarchal, male world, flipping the paradigm on its head. Can’t be coming at a better time. Just when the south and midwestern states thought they could shut it all down by outlawing abortion and banning books, out comes this movie. How could any red-blooded American deny the Barbie movie from being shone? You know every kid is going to watch it, especially if adults don’t want them to. Oh, revenge is sweet.
Let’s see these conservative states try to stuff this back in the bag.
I only wish they had at least one jab in for abortion rights. It would be hard to put that in there especially since Barbie doesn’t get it on with Ken but tells him to get a life (respect). But come on, who hasn’t stripped off all their clothes and made pretend that they are going at it? But I get it, it’s not X.
As a hippy who never had a Barbie (as most hippy children), I found it ironic to be going to this movie with my fellow hippy friends who never had Barbies either. I didn’t dress up but instead wore an anarchy T-shirts and worn Guatemalan shorts - f*ck pink-polyester-faux-fur fashion.
But non-the-less, I swung with the message and laughed at the jokes. Even though I didn’t have Barbie, as a kid, I went to my friend’s house and played with theirs. I remember my grandma giving me some Barbie clothes and I dressed my hand in them and played with the boots on my fingers for weeks until they disappeared. (Mom was such a drag.)
But now, I give my mom kudos because I don’t have body issues and I buy very little crappy clothing. I have only three pairs of shoes- sandals, sneakers, and slippers and I don’t care what people think of my outfits. I dress for me. This is all probably due to my anti-Barbie upbringing.
So even though the movie is still straight with no radical twist other than Barbie doesn’t play for the male-dominated world, I give it a peace sign approval. Anything that can move us into a more equal paradigm is good medicine.
